Lions trip up Earlham

No. 4 Des Moines Christian walked away with a victory in their Class 2A quarterfinal on Monday at Rogers Park.

The Lions (23-6 overall) were 2-2 with No. 15 Earlham (27-12) heading into the bottom of the seventh.

Senior Jennifer Reed and junior Emma Veenstra started the contest with singles. Senior Olivia Penland was then intentionally walked. Sophomore Maren Judisch then worked a walk to score the winning run in a 3-2 victory.

The Lions will now face sixth-seed Iowa City Regina (24-15) who upset No. 3 Alta-Aurelia, 7-2.

Des Moines Christian and the Regals will faceoff on Wednesday at 5 p.m. on Buena Vista University Diamond in a semifinal contest.

Judisch earned the win, scattering seven hits and giving up two runs, none earned. She fanned eight.

The Lions pounded out 12 hits, led by Veenstra, who was 3-for-4. Wilson had a two-run double to plate Penland and Mumford in the second inning.

Senior Cameryn Caskey had two hits for the Cardinals. Freshman Alli Boyle had a two-run double in the fifth to tie the contest.

The Cardinals will now face Alta-Aurela today at 1:30 p.m.
