Top-ranked Davenport Assumption has a bad taste in its mouth after last season’s Class 3A championship, but the Knights got off to a quick start in their return to Rogers Park on Monday.

Nicole Timmons and Hannah Kelley combined to pitch a one-hitter on their way to a 10-0, six-inning victory over No. 10 West Marshall (33-7 overall).

Timmons (23-0) went 5• innings before giving up a single to Brooke Snider. She fanned 11 batters and walked two.

Assumption has allowed only 18 earned runs on the season, and Timmons (0.44) and Kelley (0.42) both sport sparkling ERAs.

The Knights will face seventh-ranked Center Point-Urbana (30-10) on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. on Diamond 2.

Assumption extended a number of its streaks in the process. After an opening season loss to Moline (Ill.), the Knights have won 42 straight games.

The shutout was its seventh straight and 30th of the season.

The Knights didn’t just shut down the Trojans in the field — they hit the ball hard as well, pounding out 12.

Olivia Wardlow was 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. Emma Valainis had two doubles and drove in two runs.

Leadoff hitter Sophie Van Severen had two hits and scored two runs. Emma Johnson had two hits and an RBI. Carlie Sammon had a two-run home run, and Nicole Yoder scored three times.

The Trojans will play Humboldt (31-5) on Wednesday at 10 a.m. on Buena Vista University Diamond.
