Trades program revived

MANSON — Manson Northwest Webster Community School District revived its building and trades program for students and hired a new junior/senior high school principal in 2020.

The building and trades program, last active in 2016, was revived to give students more ways to explore what they’re good at, said Superintendent Justin Daggett.

“We wanted to revive this program to give our students more exposure to career pathways, specifically in the trades,” he said.

A partnership with local contractor Thoma Construction in Manson and Iowa Central Community College made the program work again.

Through the program, six to 10 students each trimester are targeted for participation. By working with their hands and learning the tools of various trades, they learn practical skills and earn college credits.

A block of courses, taught by adjunct carpentry instructor Luke Thoma, help bring their work to life.

“This is the first year we are offering it (again), so we are learning the best way to do it all over again,” Daggett said.

Complementary to programs like the Electrathon Team, which allows Manson students to create projects in an industrial technology classroom, the building and trades program provides another way for students to spark curiosity.

“Our hope is that, for our students who have a talent of working with their hands, that this helps them realize their career opportunities for them that are in our region,” Daggett said. “They have to learn how to be dependable, work on a team, (be responsible), as well as a myriad of skills in the trades.”

And while the program is a good alternative to those who struggle more in a traditional classroom setting, it also provides students the opportunity to gain lifelong skills in home maintenance.

The superintendent said students most love just being able to get outside, work with their hands and gain real-world experience.

Over the last year, students have had the opportunity to contribute to restoring Manson Hometown Grocery, build a long jump pit and fix problem areas in the school’s parking lot.

Jayme Hurley started as MNW’s junior/senior high school principal on July 1, succeeding outgoing Principal Kevin Wood. Wood now serves as superintendent for Sioux Central Community School District.

Hurley previously served as a 7-12 grade physical education instructor in the Independence Community School District. Throughout his career in education, he has also taught special education, at-risk education, alternative education and driver’s education.

Hurley has coached multiple sports and served as head strength and conditioning coach for Independence Junior/Senior High School.

“What stood out about Jayme was his ability to connect with people,” Daggett said. “He is very approachable and a great listener and communicator.”

“I am looking forward to teaming up with all stakeholders within the Manson Northwest Webster Community School District as we move forward with offering the best education possible for our students,” Hurley said in June.
