HUMBOLDT - The Humboldt football squad's defense overwhelmed Spencer here Friday, as the Wildcats kicked off their season with a dominating 27-0 win over the Tigers.
Quarterback Drew Thomas fired a pair of touchdown passes for the Wildcats, and that was more than enough as their experienced defenders kept Spencer completely off the scoreboard.
''We knew our defense should be a strength coming in (to the season),'' Humboldt head coach Greg Thomas said. ''With all four linebackers returning and two in the secondary, we expect big things from (the defensive unit).''
Thomas hit Austin Zylstra from 21 yards out to break the scoring ice early in the second quarter. A little over four minutes later, Thomas found Kenny Kuyper for an 8-yard TD.
Senior Jaxon Heinz scored on a 7-yard scamper as time expired in the first half. The Wildcats added a late touchdown from junior Kyle McBeth, who had a team-high 79 rushing yards on 21 carries.
Tony Nielsen (2 rushes, 57 yards) and Heinz (4-47) followed on the ground. Thomas was 10 of 17 passing for 81 yards. He also picked off a pass defensively.
Brady Ross and Geoff Bruder were the leading tacklers for Humboldt.
