Turkeys killed when trailer tips over

SAC CITY - A large number of turkeys died in an accident Sunday night after the trailer they were in was knocked over by the wind.

The incident was reported to the Sac County Sheriff's Office at 6:31 p.m. near the intersection of U.S. Highway 20 and Perkins Avenue, west of Sac City.

According to Sac County Sheriff Ken McClure, the driver of a semitrailer carrying 760 turkeys to Storm Lake pulled over after the truck experienced a "mechanical malfunction."

After pulling over, McClure said the driver unhooked the trailer on the shoulder of the road. A gust of wind blew the trailer over while it was dollied on the side of the road.

McClure estimated that about 70 percent of the turkeys died in the accident.

Sac City Fire and Rescue also responded to the scene to help remove the turkeys from the trailer.
