Coming off just its fourth state softball appearance in school history, St. Edmond recently earned six selections on the 2013 all-North Central Conference teams.
Junior Jessica Kuebler (IF), senior Allie Oberg (U/DH) and eighth-grader Maggie Harvey (C) were all tabbed to the top squad for the Gaels, while senior Katie Donnelly (P) and sophomores Anna Yung (IF) and Jaci Stumpf (OF) each made the second team. Kuebler was just one six unanimous picks.
Kuebler, a first baseman, batted .394 with 39 hits and 20 RBI in 34 games played.
"Jessica's one of the hardest working kids I've ever had the privilege of coaching," SEHS head coach Paul Hunt said. "We were fortunate to have her come up in big situations quite often. Her power bat was especially impressive."
Oberg paced the green and white in batting average (.513), RBI (28), doubles (15) and on-base percentage (.552), while contributing 41 hits.
"As she has done in past years, Allie did a great job at the plate," said Hunt. "She was real consistent in her role as a big RBI producer."
Harvey led St. Edmond in hits (50), home runs (4) and slugging percentage (.782) to go along with a .495 average, 28 runs, 20 RBI and 15 stolen bases. Behind the dish, she also committed just three errors in 220 total chances.
"Maggie was an excellent addition to our team, and she allowed Jessica the opportunity to move to first base," Hunt said. "I was very impressed with how Maggie handled the pressure of coming in as an eighth-grader at probably one of the toughest positions to play. She never let any moment get too big for her."
Donnelly, a Coe College recruit, went 17-5 with a 1.72 ERA in the circle. She surrendered 126 hits - with 147 strikeouts - in 159 innings of work.
"Katie has a very calming presence on the mound that can change the whole demeanor of our infield," said Hunt. "She really impressed me in regionals how many times she was able to get out of tough situations with minimal to no damage done."
As a shortstop, Yung batted .292 with 28 hits, 22 runs and 18 stolen bases in 33 contests.
"Anna amazed me with both her ability to cover a lot of ground and overall arm strength," Hunt said. "A lot of infielders can take hits away deep in the hole, but they can't make the long throw to get the runner out."
Stumpf, a right fielder, managed team-highs in stolen bases (33), runs (31) and triples (6) out of the leadoff spot in the order. She posted a .388 average with 45 hits and 19 RBI.
"With Jaci in the outfield, there's really not much of a gap out there," said Hunt. "She's also very aggressive on the bases and always looking for the next chance to make something happen."
St. Edmond, which placed sixth in 2A, wrapped up its season with a 27-10 overall record, including a runner-up NCC finish at 15-3.
"You have to be happy anytime you end up in the state tournament," Hunt said. "It was a proud year for us. We finally had a group to get us over that ledge. I'm very excited for the future of our program and the nucleus we have to build around."
League champion Webster City was represented on the first team by pitcher and Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne signee Kaitlyn Biere (25-4; 0.96 ERA), outfielder Kaylee Schnathorst (.359, 37 H, 29 R) and U/DH Mikaleh McCoy (.396, 38 H, 21 RBI).
Infielder Courtney Benjamin (.333, 33 H, 28 R) and outfielder Lauren Friesth (.418, 46 H, 30 R) landed on the top squad for Humboldt.
Bishop Garrigan infielder Taylor Hovey (.410, 41 H, 37 RBI), Algona infielder Michaela Heesch (.326, 28 H, 14 R) and Eagle Grove outfielder Lexie Miller (.582, 57 H, 41 SB) were chosen to the first team for each of their respective programs.
Biere, Schnathorst and Hovey were the other unanimous nominees, along with Iowa Falls-Alden's Jessi Timm and Brittney Hammond.
