First time's a charm for Durant

July 27, 2013

Third-ranked (Class 2A) Durant took full-advantage of its first-ever state softball championship appearance.

The Wildcats plated three runs in the fourth off Treynor's Madison Keysor, scoring a 3-0 victory at Rogers Park Friday afternoon.

Durant (35-8 overall) was defeated in the state semifinals a year ago, settling for third place. The second-ranked Cardinals (31-6) went on to claim gold, defeating Des Moines Christian.

Paige Compton allowed just two hits and recorded three strikeouts, besting Keysor, who will attend Kirkwood in the fall. Last year, while leading her team to the state title, Keysor was named to 2A pitcher of the year.

"I couldn't imagine a better way of ending my athletic career than this," said Compton, who plans to attend the University of Iowa in the fall, but isn't anticipating playing any sports other than intramurals. "I couldn't have asked for better coaches or teammates to do this with."

Compton retired 13 in a row between the first and fifth innings, with her defense making several exceptional plays to back her. Throughout the postseason, she pitched five shutouts, including three at state.

Despite her small frame, Compton produces a scary glare from inside the circle. She'll stalk her way to the back before unloading on hitters each and every pitch.

"It's just something I've done, but I have taken a more business-like approach this year," she said. "I think that's helped with nerves and making each game just like the rest."

Ashley Williams, Aubrey Bland and Jaclyn Ralfs all drove in runs during the fourth, as Durant played small-ball and executed several bunts, also taking advantage of two Treynor errors. Bland finished 2-for-3 at the plate.

While they lacked state finals experience, Durant returned eight players from the consolation championship team, including Compton.

"We really wanted this," she said, just moments after receiving hugs and kisses from her family.

Keysor had thrown three shutouts in five previous state games, including a 15-strikeout performance in the win over DM Christian last year. This was her first loss at Rogers Park as the starting pitcher.
