MASON CITY - The sixth-ranked (Class 4A) Fort Dodge baseball team was left with a split versus Mason City here Monday night.

The Dodgers picked up a 4-1 victory in the opener, but were clipped by the Mohawks in the nightcap, 2-1.

Tyler Vaughn earned the win on the mound, striking out eight and adding two hits at the plate. He threw 113 pitches, walking three and scattering six hits for Fort Dodge (20-9 overall, 9-7 in CIC Northern).

Cory Alexander had two hits and two runs scored, while Tommy Halligan recorded three hits and a pair of RBI.

In game two, Andrew Stover scored the lone run with a seventh inning solo home run. JC Hatcher had five strikeouts on the mound.

"This was a very frustrating split," FDSH head coach Blake Utley said. "We didn't have that competitive edge. Honestly, I didn't think we had it all day.

While nothing has been made official, Fort Dodge will likely open up postseason play against Mason City (8-12, 2-5) later this month.

Earlier this year, Fort Dodge earned a sweep at Ed McNeil Field over the Mohawks by scores of 9-2 and 10-0.

"This was eye-opening for our kids," Utley said. "We found out first-hand what happens if we don't play our best baseball. Credit Mason City for being competitive from start to finish and keeping us (from the season sweep)."

The Dodgers return to action on Wednesday at fourth-ranked Johnston.
