LAKE CITY - Friends of the Lake City Library will launch its 2013 membership drive with its annual fundraiser, Picnic in the Park. The event will be held on the Square during the Lake City Farmers Market from 4 to 6 p.m. July 9.
Those attending should bring their own chairs. Pulled pork meals ($5) and hot dog meals ($4) will include chips, baked beans, fresh veggies and a drink. Friends of the Library shirts and bags will be available for sale.
Also, from 4 to 6 p.m. Aug. 13, Friends of the Lake City Library will hold the Pool Our Resources Carnival with games on the Square for all ages and horse rides given by the Lake City Saddle Club. Friends of the Library will be coordinating this community event which will also be held in conjunction with the Farmers' Market. Proceeds will be donated to the Lake City Pool Project.
Friends of the Lake City Library support numerous programs and purchases for the library that would not be possible without their participation.
Membership in Friends of the Library is open to any individual or group upon payment of $1 for an individual), $5 for a family, $10 for a sponsor, $20 for contributing and $50 for sustaining.
Friends of the Library events this past year have included:
Wee Read - providing each newborn and their parents at Stewart Memorial Community Hospital with a handmade book bag with books and information about the lifelong importance of reading;
RAGTime at the Library (September-May) - reading, arts and games for children held on teacher in-service days;
Great Get-Away - travelogue programs held in partnership with Shady Oaks Care Center;
"A Salute to Our Veterans" program and book signing with Judy Johnson of Manson;
Luncheon celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Lake City Library building;
Open house for Norma DeVries, retiring library director; and
Construction Countdown - event for preschoolers kicking off the summer reading program: "Dig into Reading" and highlighting assistant librarian Kim Olson's book, "Construction Countdown."
Friends of the Library also supports the community by: participating in the Table Affair, an annual fundraiser of Stewart Memorial Community Hospital; volunteering at the Capri Theatre; delivering books to residents at Shady Oaks twice a month and providing a birthday program and gifts for residents of Shady Oaks annually; and providing and maintaining a copy machine in the library.
