Fort Dodge softball coach Andi Adams wanted to be upset after her team split a CIC Northern Division twinbill with Ames here at Rogers Park Monday night.
After taking a deep breath, she just couldn't.
The Dodgers and Little Cyclones played a pair of games that had a tournament feel to them. Runs were at a premium. Pitching was strong. And in the end, a couple of mistakes here and there were the difference.

The No. 8 (Class 5A) Dodgers won the opener, 1-0, while Ames came away with a 3-1 victory in the nightcap.
"I don't know what to say," Adams said. "They were two well-played games. Hats off to Ames; they played well. It would be different if we had done something horribly incorrect, but we didn't. We just did quite execute enough (in game two) and they did.''
Mallory Kilian got the win for the Dodgers (15-5 overall) in the opener, running her record to 9-2 for the season. She allowed just two hits and struck out nine. The sophomore right-hander also worked out of a couple of jams and left runners in scoring position twice.

"That first game was flawless," said Adams. "We got ourselves out of a couple of jams and so did they. That's the way softball should be played."
The Dodgers got their only run in the bottom of the fifth. Lexi Astor singled to start the frame. She then stole second and moved to third when the throw down was bad.
Lani Van Zyl reached on a fielder's choice, as Ames held Astor at third. Kilian drove home the run with a perfectly executed squeeze bunt. However, Kilian took the pitch off her finger when she bunted and had to finish with a bruise on her throwing hand.
Ames (11-9) had a couple of chances, but Kilian kept them off the scoreboard. The Little Cyclones had runners at second and third in the top of the second, but two strikeouts ended the frame.
In the seventh, Ames got the tying run to second, but Killian again fanned two batters to end it.
Fort Dodge also turned a double play in the sixth when Van Zyl caught a line drive at short and doubled off a runner at first base.
The second contest was scoreless until the fourth when Ames broke through on a 2-out, RBI double from Hannah Lindsey. The Dodgers tied it in the fifth when Becca Sunken scored from second after an Ames error.
The Little Cyclones added single runs in the sixth and seventh to prevail, though.
Fort Dodge was turned away in the third when Riley Hartman was thrown out at the plate. Kilian was also stranded at third in the fourth frame.
Sophomore Cassie Tjebben took the loss for the Dodgers, dropping her to 6-2. She went the first five frames before Killian pitched the sixth and seventh.
Madi Bennett had two of the Dodgers' six hits in the second affair.
Fort Dodge steps out of 5A play here tonight facing Carroll Kuemper in a make-up game from May 29. The JV starts at 5:30 with a single varsity game to follow.
