BOONE - Al Nelson, former director of the Fort Dodge Fort museum, will give a presentation on Fort Dodge founder William Williams at 7 p.m. March 12 at the Boone County Historical Center, 602 Story St, Boone.

The program will feature Williams' journal and sketches from his journey up the Mississippi River from St. Louis to Fort Snelling, Minn. in 1849. He assisted in the establishment of Fort Clarke/Fort Dodge a year later.

In 160 years these "snapshots" of history have never been published. His artistic style provides glimpses into mid-nineteenth century culture.

Nelson's presentation will include a discussion of the circumstances surrounding Williams' excursion and views of his sketches.

This program is part of the Boone County Historical Society's heritage series, "Sketches 1849." The Society is open Monday through Friday from 1 to 4 p.m. and also by appointment. For more information, contact Executive Director Pamela Schwartz at 432-1907.
