The St. Edmond girls basketball team continued to have Clear Lake's number on Friday night.

Prevailing for the 11th straight time in the head-to-head series, the Gaels (15-2 overall, 14-2 NCC) earned a convincing 54-38 North Central Conference triumph inside the SEHS gym.

With the victory, St. Edmond remained tied atop the league standings with Hampton-Dumont.

Alli Huss scores for St. Edmond against Clear Lake on Friday.

"We knew coming in that (the Lions) could shoot it, but I thought our man-to-man defense was the difference (Friday)," Gael head coach Scott Messerly said. "I was really pleased with our effort against a good team that already swept Hampton this year.

"It's important for us to keep playing well now before tournaments start (St. Edmond will face either Prairie Valley or Carroll Kuemper in the Class 2A regional quarterfinals on Feb. 12) ."

Alli Huss, a 5-foot-10 junior, ignited the Gaels with a game-high 16 points on 6-for-13 shooting.

Sophomores Anna Yung (15) and Jaci Stumpf (10) each scored in double figures as well for SEHS, which took both meetings this season from Clear Lake. Despite shooting just 19-for-50 from the field and 11 of 21 at the free throw line, the Gaels committed only 12 turnovers.

"I thought Jaci kind of took the game under her wing," said Messerly. "She was all over the floor and played excellent defense."

Defending NCC champion St. Edmond jumped out to a 20-6 edge following the first quarter behind eight points from Huss. The Gaels later saw their lead trimmed to just six with 3:14 left in the contest, however, the green and white sealed the deal with a 10-0 burst in crunch time.

SEHS went 9-for-11 from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter alone.

"We did a nice job of (defensive) rebounding and holding (the Lions) to just one shot," Messerly said. "This was a big win for us that will hopefully carry over to (tonight) against Carroll Kuemper."

Bailey Kibsgaard tallied 14 points for Clear Lake (12-4, 11-3), while Logan Anderson was next in line with 10. The Lions, who saw their five-game win streak halted, fired at a 33 percent clip from the field and racked up 24 turnovers.

St. Edmond's last loss against Clear Lake came during the 2006-07 campaign.

Aiming for their fourth victory in a row, the Gaels welcome Carroll Kuemper (10-6) tonight for a 6:15 p.m. tip.
