LAKE CITY - Four people were killed in a house fire in Lake City.

The fire was reported around 1:45 a.m. when a Lake City police officer spotted smoke coming from the south side of the Calhoun County town, Lake City Fire Chief Mel Alcox said.

Three children, an 8-year-old, 3-year-old and an 11-month old baby, along with a 22-year-old woman reportedly died in the blaze.

A pile of debris sits on the lawn at 703 South Illinois Street in Lake City Wednesday afternoon after a fire destroyed the home and killed four people. Lake City Fire Chief Mel Alcox said the fire claimed the lives of three children, an 8-year-old, a 3-year-old and an 11-month-old baby and a 22-year-old woman.

When firefighters arrived, they found flames coming from a window on the north side of the home, flames were so intense they were unable to enter the home, Alcox said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the State Fire Marshals Office, but Alcox said the cause appears to be electrical in nature, caused by a lamp near a sofa in the living room.

More details on the fire will be released as they become available.
