People who build new homes in Fort Dodge could avoid paying property taxes on them for up to seven years under an incentive program being crafted by city leaders....

Hang in there, ColB. Dodge ain't what it used to be - thanks in small part to its militant labor unions - and Iowa taxes on its less-favored businesses. Iowas once funnest small city has become just another shopping center.

I said couple loosely meaning maybe a tad longer like back to the '70s and YOU must also remember that these newer census figures include the addition of 1100 prisoners. I have spoken from my perch on high!!!

Also according to the last census, the number of housing units available in Fort Dodge has gone from 11,636 in 1980 to 11,168, a reduction of 468 units. So I'm thinking there aren't as many available housing units as some might believe.

And, please, if you are going to offer criticism and negative comments from your perch of how many miles removed from Fort Dodge, at least use accurate information and not how you either remember it or you believe it is.

Yes, Fort Dodge, per census results has lost population, but not 6000-7000 in the last two decades. The only way you can even get a reduction in population of just over 6000 is comparing the 1970 census (31,263) to the 2010 census (25,206). Since "the last two decades" was used in the argument, let's just see what the differences are in the census results of 1990 and 2010. The result is a net reduction of 688 people, not 6000-7000. 1990=25,894 2010=25,206

I agree Anderson. I'm all in favor of incentives to achieve smart goals like making existing homes more efficient but, simply creating incentives for building a home is desperate and silly. I still don't believe this massive influx of new residents is going to be nearly as noticeable as the hype is suggesting. This city has lost around 6,000-7,000 residents in the last couple of decades-is there really a shortage of homes now? Leave the market alone and let people with the needs and means do what they want to solve their lodging issues. I am still in favor of encouraging folks to be greener and more efficient as it will benefit us all but, this isn't a case where the market needs tampering with.

More subsidies for yet more people; where does it end? Trust it is just Ft. Dodge's current businesses & residents (home owners AND renters) whose pockets will be picked for redistribution to those who might otherwise have had to make do with a few fewer - and less plush - square feet than otherwise, not other residents of the county, i.e. county valuations and levies thereon are not affected?
