Learn about HPV virus

To the editor:

Health care professionals, parents and of teenagers in Fort Dodge and the surrounding communities are invited to dinner, a film viewing and discussion regarding the HPV virus on Thursday at the Fort Dodge Middle School auditorium. This free event begins with dinner at 5:30 followed by the film and panel discussion to wrap up by 8 p.m.

“Someone You Love: The HPV Epidemic” is a feature length in-depth documentary of the stories and struggle, tragedy and triumph surrounding this complicated and often misunderstood infection. The film viewing will be followed by a panel discussion with: Ilene Olson, M.D., Ob/Gyn from UnityPoint Clinic; Kelli Wallace, M.D., Webster County Public Health; Richard Votta, M.D., UnityPoint Pediatrics; and Stacy Kraft, R.N., Webster County Health Department.

If you have a preteen or teen, you’ve heard your family doctor tell you that your child needs a human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine. The main goal of the vaccine is to protect your child against cancer and that is what I stress to my patients and their families every day. The HPV three-vaccine series is recommended for all boys and girls starting at the 11-year well child visit because it is a safe and effective.

Please join me on Thursday for the “Someone You Love” film viewing and important community discussion. There is no cost to attend this event. Participants may register under Community Education at www.unitypoint.org/fortdodge/classes-and-events. For questions or additional information contact Patty Grossnickle at 574-6183 or patty.grossnickle@unitypoint.org.
