It’s time to buy a poppy

To the editor:

As Memorial Day approaches, the men and women who have served this nation in times of war should be remembered. One way this can be done is by donating for a poppy.

The American Legion Auxiliary adopted the poppy as a memorial flower in 1921 and in 1924 instituted the national poppy program to protect the poppy from becoming commercialized and ensuring that every Auxiliary poppy is made by a disabled or hospitalized veteran.

The donations received by Auxiliary volunteers for the poppies goes to assist and support veterans and their families. In addition, poppy making provides disabled veterans with a rehabilitation activity and a small personal income. The physical and mental activity of poppy making provides therapeutic benefits for these veterans. All poppy making materials are provided to them free of charge.

The Auxiliary will be assisted by the American Legion in distributing poppies on Friday, May 27, and Saturday, May 28. Show your tribute to our veterans by donating for a poppy.
