Great Lakes must be preserved

Congress must allocate sufficient monies for this crucial work

President Donald Trump’s 2019 budget proposal is both right and wrong when it comes to an ongoing project to clean up the Great Lakes.

Trump proposes to slash federal funding for the project by about 90 percent. That could jeopardize progress already made in dealing with pollution, invasive species and other threats to the Great Lakes ecosystem.

From that aspect, Trump is wrong.

But, as is the case with so many of the president’s initiatives, he is right in insisting that if taxpayers’ money is spent, results must be achieved.

Too often, access to Uncle Sam’s wallet is an excuse for wasteful spending. That needs to end, all across the board.

Members of Congress should insist on adequate funding for the Great Lakes project — with emphasis on “adequate,” not necessarily every dime being sought for the expensive campaign.
