Withholding news doesn’t make sense

During a visit to Bangladesh on Aug. 29, Secretary of State John Kerry had some advice for the press: Stop scaring people. Cut back on those reports of terrorist atrocities.

Kerry – who, incidentally, was in Bangladesh to seek more help in the war against terrorists – had this to say about the mass murderers: “Perhaps the media would do us all a service if they didn’t cover it quite as much. People wouldn’t know what’s going on.”

No, they wouldn’t. Clearly, Kerry and maybe his boss, President Barack Obama, would like that at times.

Move along. Nothing to see here. Let the authorities handle it …

The press has a duty to tell members of the public what is actually taking place. Sometimes the news is unpleasant. Even so, people can only respond sensibly to events when they know the whole truth about what is occurring.
