Our local arts world is thriving

The arts are thriving in our community. The Fort Dodge Fine Arts Association, which has been part of the local nonprofit world since 1985, is moving aggressively to spread that word.

Susan Ahlers Leman, the FDFAA president, provided a briefing Thursday at the Greater Fort Dodge Growth Alliance about the group’s work. She said being a focal point for information about local arts activities is a big part of the association’s mission.

“Our hope is to be a conduit, a support and advocate for everything that is amazing about our community,” Ahlers Leman said.

The FDFAA has more than a dozen members. They include Blanden Charitable Foundation, Comedia Musica Players, Fort Dodge Area Symphony, Fort Dodge Senior High Choir Boosters, Fort Dodge Choral Society, Harmony Brigade, Hawkeye Community Theatre, Iowa Central Community College, Karl King Municipal Band, Lizard Creek Blues Society, Sonshine Singers, St. Edmond Music Boosters, Stage Door Productions and Vincent House/YWCA.

To help area residents keep track of what is happening in the local arts world, the FDFAA provides on its website – fdfineartsassociation.org – information about performances and events.

The local economy is booming. So too are the arts.

According the Ahlers Leman, on average there are about six nonprofit performances each month. That number more than doubles when for-profit artists are included.

The FDFAA is an important local clearinghouse for information about the arts. It also provides a variety of services to its member organizations.

This association makes an important contribution to the quality of life in our town and county. Its work – and that of its member organizations – deserve strong community support.
