U.S. military faces many challenges

Many serious challenges face the U.S. armed forces. But Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, no doubt acting at the behest of his boss, President Barack Obama, thinks climate change is a top concern.

“Our militaries’ readiness could be tested and our capabilities could be stressed,” Hagel claimed recently in a speech at a conference of military leaders.

The armed forces’ readiness and capabilities already are being tested and stressed, as Hagel knows. The situation has nothing at all to do with climate change.

Many military officers listening to Hagel may have been shaking their heads in disbelief, if only mentally. They know much of the challenge facing them involves government policy, not climate change.

At a time when China is building up its navy, the United States is reducing the strength of naval forces.

At a time when terrorist organizations call for new military approaches, U.S. leaders are forced to stand off and launch cruise missiles that do little harm.

And at a time when intelligent policy could hamper the terrorists, the Obama administration relies on politics.

Hagel’s speech sounds very much like he is searching for a scapegoat. That will not deter the many enemies Americans face now and will in the future.
