Fight against Islamic State is failing

Our nation’s policy aimed at destroying the Islamic State terrorist army isn’t even containing it. That, of course, was President Barack Obama’s original goal.

And American airstrikes are doing little to safeguard anti-terrorist allies such as the Kurdish people in Iraq.

After Obama declared the U.S. would use military force against the Islamic State, a firestorm of cruise missiles was launched from American warships. Strikes were aimed at Islamic State installations in Iraq and Syria. Intelligence sources have revealed that missiles fired into Syria killed no more than two important Islamic State leaders.

So feeble has been the U.S. air war against the Islamic State that the organization continues on the offensive. Kurdish fighters – our most effective allies in the region – have suffered enormous losses. Airstrikes amount to no more than pinpricks against the terrorists.

Meanwhile, White House policy intended to convince others to provide ground troops has proven absurd. Again, the Kurds are not receiving adequate assistance. Nations such as Turkey, asked for ground troops, have their own agendas. That nation’s leaders shed no tears when Kurds are killed.

Clearly, U.S. strategy against Islamic State terrorists is failing miserably. It needs to be re-evaluated – realistically – before the terrorists gain more victories.
