These charges require action

Department of Veterans Affairs officials have testified in Congress that there is no basis for allegations of corruption and mismanagement that may have killed as many as 40 veterans at a VA?hospital in Phoenix.

Not good enough, lawmakers should respond.

Reports of the problem surfaced after a doctor, retired after working at the hospital for more than 20 years, complained. No one has suggested he had any reason to make up the story.

Obviously, as Sen. Bernie Sanders. I-Vt., stressed, the matter should not be decided in the news media. But Sanders added Congress will conduct a full, comprehensive probe of the report.

Good.

Again, the allegations are far too serious to be dropped solely on the word of VA officials.
