Honoring Tom and Norma Schmoker

Friendship Haven has been an important part of Fort Dodge for more than six decades. It offers a variety of living options for seniors. Since it was founded in the mid-20th century, this community within a community has grown and evolved in response to the changing needs of the sectors of the population it serves.

In addition to on-campus residential accommodations, Friendship Haven also offers adult day services to members of the community who are at least 18 years old. This program is designed to provide companionship, memory support services and help with personal care. The goal is to allow participants to continue living in their homes for as long as is feasible.

Tom and Norma Schmoker provided the lead gift for Generations Adult Services. This financial commitment is part of Friendship Haven’s Dare to Imagine Beyond the Dream capital campaign. Friendship Haven is naming a 4,400-square-foot building to be constructed to house this important program Schmoker Adult Day Services.

Julie Thorson, Friendship’s Haven’s president and chief executive officer, paid tribute to the Schmokers in announcing this recognition.

“The Schmokers’ gift is very generous and humbling,” Thorson said. “Tom and Norma have been so kind to the Fort Dodge community throughout their lives, and I’m glad Friendship Haven has a special place in their hearts. With this gift, their contributions will be recognized in a very prominent building on our campus.”

The Messenger joins Thorson in saluting the Schmokers. Their important support for this project strengthens Friendship Haven’s already superb ability to make our town a better place to live.
