PATRICIA M. HOLTAPP

Patricia Margaret Clark was born August 17, 1935, at Fort Dodge, Iowa. She was the daughter of Jay and Phyllis (Kinsey) Clark. Pat graduated from Dana High School in Dana, Iowa, in 1953. She went on to attend St. Joseph Mercy School of Nursing, Sioux City, Iowa, graduating in 1956 with great distinction as a Registered Nurse. On November 11, 1956, Pat was united in marriage to Harold William Holtapp in Ogden, Iowa. Harold and Pat lived in Fort Dodge before moving to their farm near Pomeroy, Iowa. They settled near Pomeroy where they raised their five children and were active supporters of the community and schools. Pat worked part-time as a nurse while raising her children and then was the first Director of Nursing at the Pomeroy Care Center from 1973-1988. The staff that she led at the Care Center have shared that she was a mentor, teacher, and friend who influenced so many to become better caregivers and nurses. She then worked as a Public Health Nurse from 1988-2000 and served many people and families in Pocahontas County. Pat was known as a deeply caring and excellent nurse by her patients and their families. She and Harold moved from their farm in 2006 to their home in Pocahontas.

Pat was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church where she sang in the church choir for many years and served through the Church Council, Ladies Aid, women’s circles, and Steven’s Ministry.

Pat was actively involved in Pomeroy Community School as a parent volunteer. She enjoyed participation in SAK Club, Easy Does It Club, and Daughters of the American Revolution. She was involved in county and statewide groups that served the health care needs of older people in our community.

Pat enjoyed caring for people whether it was in her home or in the community. She wanted each person to feel welcomed and comfortable. Pat was known as someone who took charge and made a difference with a loving, generous spirit. She loved laughing and made any gathering more fun. Pat loved being with her family — telling stories and sharing news. She loved to travel and had wonderful trips to Europe and other places in the United States. She took great joy in grandchildren and was “Grandma Pat” to many who were family friends. Having great-grandchildren in the last few years gave her another great blessing, and she strongly connected to each of them.

Survivors include her husband, Harold; children Jay (Vickie) Holtapp of Pomeroy, IA; Kathy (daughter-in-law) Schmitz of Lost Nation, IA; Mary (Bruce Mills) Holtapp of Kalamazoo, MI; Mike (Debbie) Holtapp of Pomeroy, IA; Susan (Dale Freiday) Holtapp-Freiday of Minneapolis, MN; 8 grand-children; 10 great-grandchildren; and brothers, John (Judy) Clark of Columbia, MO and Jay Clark of Minneapolis, MN.

Pat was preceded in death by beloved family members including her parents; son, Dale Holtapp; grandson, Nick Holtapp; sister-in-law, Shirley Clark.

The family requests that memorials go to Pat’s favorite charities in lieu of flowers. She was passionate about supporting St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, St. John’s Lutheran Church in Pomeroy, and the Good Guy Open (goodguyopen.com – supports families coping with cancer who have financial needs).
