Orville Dean Slotten was born November 10, 1939, in Slifer. He attended school in Otho. Following his education, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to the Otho area. In 1977, he was united in marriage to Nancy Sheker and the couple made their home in Otho. Orville worked for Bush Hog, Miles Lane in Denver, Smithway Motor Xpress, and Lanny Jordison Trucking. In May of 1988 the couple purchased the Otho Pub and they owned and operated it for 31 years, best known for their famous “loaded hashbrowns.” Orville gave every kid a bag of M&Ms after their meal, which he referred to as their “late movie ticket.” Orville was an avid pool player and played in pool leagues and tournaments for over 25 years. Most notably, he competed in the national VNEA Tournament in Las Vegas in 2005 and was State of Iowa Senior division champion in 2007. He also enjoyed spending time working on and maintaining his semi truck-trailer go kart which he loved including in area parades. Many pub patrons will remember his desire to know what everyone wanted to drink as soon as they walked in the door of the pub, many times before they could even sit down. Orv will also be remembered for his trademark farewell of “be careful” as patrons left the Pub.

Memorials may be left to family discretion.
