DENNIS LAWRENCE HAALAND

MASON CITY — Dennis Lawrence Haaland passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 10th. Denny was a friend to many, seemingly knowing people everywhere he went.

Denny was a graduate of Clarion High School in 1967. Following this, Denny enlisted in the United States Army, serving as a clerk-typist, including a stint in Korea from 1969-1970. He was nicknamed “Flying Fingers”, reportedly typing 90 works per minute, and “Hayseed”, since he was from Iowa. Following this, he demonstrated that he was a natural at sales and service, working for Lindsay Soft Water, Doc’s Water Service, Boehnke’s Pilot Car Service, Hoglund Bus Company, All Star Pest Control, and Mills Fleet Farm.

He had a zest for life, and was a lover of the outdoors and animals, including his dogs Lacey and Lucky. He enjoyed fishing, hunting pheasants, metal detecting, gambling, cruising the lake, and exercising.

He was once married to Vicki Fisher, with whom he remained life-long friends. He was preceded in death by his mother Pearl Berkenes Haaland. He is survived by his siblings Phil (Jenny) Haaland of Thor, IA; Fern (Dan) Roche of Glendale, AZ; and Rich Haaland (Phoenix, AZ); nieces and nephews Wanda (Don) Shelton of Thor, IA; Mike Pigman of Thor, IA; Kim (Carl) Steil of Eagle Grove, IA; Michelle Olson of Cedar Rapids, IA; LaDonna Gannon of San Diego, CA; Justine (Brian) Hoop of Fort Dodge; Jason (Betsy) Haaland of Macungie, PA; Jimmy (Maren) Roche of Brooklyn Park, MN; Jerry (Erin) Roche of Ames, IA; and Brandon (Sarah) Haaland of Dallas, TX; great-nieces and nephews Alysha, Caitlin, and Zach, Maddie, Emily, and Abbi, and Julianna and Cora, numerous cousins and countless friends.

A celebration of life with food and fellowship will be held from 2-4 p.m., at the VFW Hall in Clear Lake, IA, on Monday, July 15th, the day after what would have been Denny’s 71st birthday. For those looking to make a donation in Denny’s honor, please consider the Humane Society of North Iowa.
