DOROTHY CARLON

GOWRIE — Dorothy V. Carlon, 90, passed away Sun­day, Sep­tem­ber 2, 2018 at Pearl Valley Rehab & Nursing at Gowrie, Iowa. Funeral services will be 10:30 am, Wednesday, September 5, 2018 at Zion Lutheran Church, Gowrie, with Rev. James Hoover Mossman officiating. Burial will be at Gowrie Township Cemetery. Friends may call after 4:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Palmer Funeral Home, Gowrie. Memorials may be left to Zion Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 63, Gowrie, IA 50543.

Dorothy Vivian (Starr) Carlon was born on September 9, 1927 in Fort Madison, Iowa. Dorothy was raised and educated in Fort Madison, then continued her education at the University of Iowa in Speech Pathology. After graduating from the University of Iowa, Dorothy went to work for the Fort Dodge School System for three years as a Speech therapist, developing the first speech therapy program for the school district. In 1954, Dorothy was united in marriage to Charles Carlon in Fort Madison, Iowa. The couple established their home on a farm near Gowrie. To this union five children were born. Charles Carlon died in 1983, and Dorothy continued to reside at the family farm until moving to Gowrie in 1999. Dorothy was employed at the Congregate Meal Program in Gowrie as Site Manager for several years. From 1986 until 1997, Dorothy worked for Palmer & Sons Funeral Home in Gowrie.

Dorothy was a member of Zion Lutheran Church where she was active in the women’s organizations, circles, taught Sunday school, and served as a Stephens Minister. Dorothy was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and Svenska Clubben. Dorothy was a 49-year breast cancer survivor. She was a devoted wife and mother, actively sharing and teaching life’s basic skills to all of her family. Dorothy was always one to think of others first. She cared for both of her parents and mother-in-law in her home on the farm in their later years. Through her life she faced a number of trials and hardships strengthened by her Christian faith.

Those remaining to cherish her memory include her five children, daughter Diane Olive (Les) of Brookings, SD; son Roger Carlon (Diane) of Council Bluffs, IA; son David Carlon (Lori) of Gowrie, IA; son Alan Carlon (Jani) of DeForest; WI, daughter Nancy Britson (Curt) of Rochester, MN; twelve grandchildren, Suzanne, Derek, Abby, Amy, Alex, Kyla, Jared, Ashley, Kaitlin, Rebecca, Natalie, and Allison; and two great grandchildren, Nathaniel and Nora. She was preceded in death by her parents, Floyd and Cecilia (Humm) Starr; her husband, Charles Carlon; brother, Floyd Starr, Jr.; and sisters, Katherine Cone and Janette Gornto.
