DALE THOMAS WESTRE

Dale Thomas Westre, 89 of Lehigh went to his heavenly home on Thursday, July 13, 2017 at the Fort Dodge Villa Care Center.

Visita­tion will be Sunday from 4 to 7 with funeral service on Monday at 10:30 at Gunderson Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Dale Thomas was born on July 11, 1928 to Tom and Helen (Ekstrom) Westre. He grew up in the Vincent area attending the Newark country school. He later helped his dad farm. Dale joined 4-H where he started raising swine. On September 16, 1947 he was united in marriage to Millie Mae Clark at the Swedish Lutheran Church in Duncombe. The two of them made their home in the rural Lehigh area. They were blessed with 3 daughters. Dale worked at Felco Land O Lakes for several years until making farming and purebred swine production his full time job. He started out with Hampshires and in 1968 started W&H Yorkshires with his son-in-law, Ivan Hollman and Karl Hollman. In the early 70’s he added Durocs. Over the years he was very active in the swine industry. He was on the committee that organized the Webster Country Pork Producers, becoming their first President. Also served on the Purebred Swine Council Board, Purebred State Hampshire Board President, Iowa Pork Producers, American Yorkshire Association President, Iowa Duroc Breeders Association, and helped build the Iowa Swine Test Station in Ames. He received numerous awards including the 1965 Master Seedstock Producers award. In 1968, sold the first purebred boar to Japan and at the Iowa State Fair sold a boar to California who would be named, “Blue Boy” that would be in the movie, State Fair. He held several production sales on the farm through the years. Later he would be employed with Compart’s Boar Store of Iowa until his retirement.

Dale is survived by his daughters, Pam (Ivan) Hollman, Fort Dodge, Paula (Denny) Spencer, Fort Dodge and Peg (Marc) Compart, Lehigh. Grandchildren, Jennifer Hollman (Chad Frantum), Bayard, Jason Hollman, Fort Dodge, Jessica Hollman, Chicago, Il, Jeremy (Antonette) Kennedy, Genoa, Wi, Jamie Herrmann, Eagle Grove, Amie (Mike) Kallansrud, Tom (Lisa) Compart, Theresa Compart (fiance, Grant Smith) all of Fort Dodge and Bryan Compart, Madrid. Great-grand children, Max Hollman, Brayden, Makinzy and Karter Kennedy, Reco Jolly, Slade Babb, Kaleb Anderson, Owen and Henry Compart and Gracie Kallansrud. Step grandchildren Jennifer Axness, Justin (Beth) Spencer and Joni (Josh) Olson. Step great grandchildren Brooke, Brady and Bryson Axness, Drew Spencer, Leilah, Devon and Charlie Olson, David and Anthony Schavone, Sydney and Gage Kennedy and Cort Kallansrud.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife Millie Mae of 69 years, his parents and sister, Donna Reynolds.

Dale was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Burnside. Dale’s favorite pastimes were watching the Chicago Cubs and old time T.V. shows, fishing, spending time with his family and devoted daschund, Maggie Mae.
