A report of gunshots being fired has led to two teenagers being arrested on weapons charges.

Zachary R. Bender, 18, and T’Vonn T. Gully, 18, both of Fort Dodge, were arrested Friday afternoon.

Officers were dispatched to the area of 1000 10th Ave. S.W. at 3:42 p.m. after a report of gunshots being fired. As officers were responding, Fort Dodge Police Chief Tim Carmody said another caller reported seeing a vehicle speeding away from the area.

Officer Donald McLaren found a vehicle matching the description and pulled it over in the 100 block of South 15th Street.

During the traffic stop, a loaded short-barreled bolt action .22 rifle was found in a backpack in the back of the vehicle. It’s alleged the gun was within arm’s reach of both Bender, who was driving, and Gully, his passenger, according to the criminal complaint.

Both teens were arrested and charged with possession of an offensive weapon and carrying weapons. Bender was also charged with possession of marijuana.

Bender and Gully both appeared in Webster County Magistrate Court Saturday morning. Gully was ordered held on $7,000 bond and had his preliminary hearing set for May 30.

Bender, who had already posted bond, appeared with his attorney, Derek Johnson, of Fort Dodge. Johnson requested that his client’s preliminary hearing be waived and the case was sent to Webster County District Court.
