Ubben admits to not filing tax return

SIOUX CITY – A Stratford woman pleaded guilty to federal charges after she admitted to not filing an income tax return.

Elaine Ubben, of Stratford, told a federal judge that she worked for Stratford Mutual Telephone Co. and served as a bookkeeper for her husband’s business from 2005-2009. Ubben said she was responsible for filing her and her husband’s tax returns, but admitted she intentionally didn’t do that.

The Ubbens owed over $120,000 for 2005-2008, according to a statement from the United states attorney’s office for the Northern District of Iowa.

“IRS Criminal Investigation directs its efforts at the portion of American taxpayers who willfully and intentionally violate their known legal duty to voluntarily file income tax returns,” Tanya Brewer, acting special agent in charge of Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation, said.

Ubben faces up to one year in prison and a $100,000 fine.

Her sentencing date has not yet been scheduled.

Blaze levels garage near Callender

CALLENDER – A garage in rural Webster County was destroyed in a Monday night fire.

”It was rolling pretty good when we got there,” said Callender Fire Chief Kevin Kruse. ”There was no saving it.”

No one was injured in the fire at 1613 280th St. The blaze was reported at 5:52 p.m.

Kruse said extension cords connected to heating equipment short-circuited, causing the fire. He said the heating equipment was for pens next to the garage that housed ducks. The ducks, he said, were not harmed.

He said firefighters were on the scene for about three hours.

Kruse and Webster County assessor’s office records identified the property owner as Valerie Clark.
