Open burning of yard waste not allowed in Fort Dodge

Open burning of yard waste remains illegal in Fort Dodge.

“No open burning is allowed in the city of Fort Dodge,” said Fort Dodge Fire Chief Steve Hergenreter. “We have had some burning lately.”

Each spring and fall, the City Council lifts the burning ban for about a week. However, that has not happened yet this spring.

“A period of burning will be allowed, but this is not it,” Hergenreter said.

Recreational fires using firewood in outdoor fireplaces and pits are legal.

However, if there is a complaint about a recreational fire, police or firefighters can order it to be extinguished.

“We need to be mindful of our neighbors,” Hergenreter said.

Open burning of yard waste is illegal in Fort Dodge except during periods permitted by the City Council. Open burning of garbage is always illegal.
