Orphan Train program is Saturday

For decades, organizations in cities on the East Coast sent thousands of children on trains to destinations in other states. The organizations, dedicated to caring for children, believed they were giving those children a chance at a better life than what was available to them where they lived. The Orphan Trains ran from 1854 to 1929. More than 10,000 of those children came to Iowa.

The Webster County Genealogical Society will host Dennis Wilson at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Fort Dodge Public Library. Wilson will speak about the Orphan Train program. He is a retired Canadian Pacific Railway conductor who lives in Mason City. The program will last about an hour. It is in conjunction with the genealogical society’s open house. There will be refreshments.
