Eighth Avenue South rebuild to begin on Monday

The reconstruction of a long section of Eighth Avenue South in Fort Dodge is to begin Monday, and drivers will face immediate traffic restrictions.

Beginning Monday, Eighth Avenue South near 29th Street will be closed to traffic, according to the city engineering staff.

Also, 31st Street between Eighth and Ninth avenues south will be closed beginning Monday.

Signs marking the necessary detours are already in place.

The traffic restrictions are needed because of a project that will rebuild Eighth Avenue South between 25th and 32nd streets. It includes new sanitary sewers, water mains, storm sewers, a new concrete road surface and sidewalks on both sides of the street.

Wicks Construction, of Decorah, was hired by the City Council in December to do the work at a cost of $3,115,507.60.

The city has $1.2 million from the state to help pay for the job.
