Truck rolls after passenger takes wheel

FONDA — A truck and camper rolled outside of Fonda on Tuesday after a passenger reportedly grabbed the steering wheel, Pocahontas County Sheriff Brian Larsen said.

Teresa Petersen, of Red Oak, was driving the truck and was injured in the crash, Larsen said.

The accident happened before 11:08 a.m. Tuesday, about four miles north of Fonda on County Road N28. The 2006 Ford pickup was traveling north pulling a 2012 Trail Runner camper.

The accident occurred when a passenger in the vehicle, Austin Petersen, interfered with the operation of the vehicle and grabbed the steering wheel, Larsen said. The passenger’s actions caused the driver to lose control and go into the east ditch.

The truck and camper then rolled over toward the driver’s side and eventually came to rest on the passenger side.

Teresa Petersen was extracted from the truck by Fonda and Varina firefighters, and was transported by Fonda Ambulance to Loring Hospital in Sac City. The passenger was uninjured, Larsen said.

Both the vehicle and the camper are considered a total loss.

The sheriff’s office was assisted at the scene by the Fonda Police Department.
