Utility finances on City Council agenda

The finances of the water system will be the focus of the Fort Dodge City Council when it meets Monday.

The council will meet at 6 p.m. in the Municipal Building, 819 First Ave. S.

During that session, the council will consider taking action to borrow up to $1.2 million to pay for water system improvements.

The council will also consider the second reading of measures to increase the monthly water and sewer bills.

The proposed water rate increases come in two parts. The first is a 2 percent increase to be enacted on Jan. 1, 2018, and again on Jan. 1, 2019, to cover the costs of running the water system.

The second part of the proposed increase is a $3.50 per month charge to pay for installing reverse osmosis equipment in the John W. Pray Water Facility. The first $3.50 per month increase is set to go into effect Jan. 1, 2018. The second one is to go into effect Jan. 1, 2019.

A pair of 2 percent increases in the sanitary sewer rate are also proposed. They would go into effect Jan. 1, 2018, and Jan. 1, 2019.
