Brief filed in Corey Trott appeal

ROCKWELL CITY – The Iowa attorney general’s office has filed an appeal brief in the case of Corey Trott.

Trott, 34, of Rockwell City, is serving a life sentence after being convicted of killing Rockwell City Police Officer Jamie Buenting.

Trott was found guilty of first-degree murder in September 2014.

He is appealing his conviction.

Assistant Iowa Attorney General Jean Pettinger filed a brief in state appellate court Sept. 29, according to online court records.

No date has been set to hear the appeal.

Trott shot and killed Buenting on Sept. 13, 2013 as officers with the Fort Dodge/Webster County Special Emergency Response Team were trying to arrest Trott on an outstanding warrant.

After officers broke a window in Trott’s bedroom, a single bullet was fired, hitting Buenting in the neck. He was pronounced dead at Stewart Memorial Community Hospital in Lake City.

At trial, Trott’s attorneys argued that while their client did shoot and kill Buenting, it wasn’t first-degree murder. They asked jurors instead to find Trott guilty of a lesser charge.

It took just under two hours for Trott to be convicted of first-degree murder.
