FD explosion’s cause is likely fireworks

A commercial-grade fireworks mortar was the likely cause of an explosion Saturday afternoon at 1433 First Ave. N.

The Iowa Fire Marshal’s Office was called in to assist in investigating the explosion, according to a statement from the Fort Dodge Police Department. Their search of the house indicated that “some type of large, commercial-grade firework” was set off in the house.

No other devices were located during the search. Evidence was gathered and will be sent to the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation lab for analysis.

Timothy Wilson has been identified as one of the two residents in the home at the time of the explosion. Wilson said he was awakened by an unknown black male who set off the explosive device.

Wilson received minor scratches to his forehead, but was not transported to the hospital.

The explosion occurred in the living room of the home at about 1:13 p.m., and damage was limited to the one room. The incident left no visible damage to the outside of the home.
