Patty Grossnickle recently received the DAISY Award, which is given to “honor the super-human work nurses do every day at the bedside.” She was honored during a celebration with her family and team members, receiving a certificate, pin and sculpture.

Patty Grossnickle, RN, coordinator of cancer care in Oncology Services, received the DAISY Award at UnityPoint Health — Trinity Regional Medical Center.

She was nominated for the award by a co-worker, who is also a patient in the Cancer Center.

Her nomination reads: “I’ve had the pleasure of knowing and working with Patty at UnityPoint Health. Patty is the most compassionate and dedicated nurse, and I’ve seen firsthand the positive impact she has on patients.

“In July 2022, I got to experience firsthand what an incredible nurse Patty was when I was diagnosed with and quickly began treatment for breast cancer. Patty has been by my side since day one, from my surgical consult to how my port should feel when accessed. Patty makes sure my questions are answered and ensures I feel comfortable throughout the treatment. Patty is knowledgeable and kind. She is compassionate and pours her heart into her patients. Thank you, Patty, for helping me through one of my toughest seasons of life yet.”

Grossnickle was honored during a celebration with her family and team members. She received a certificate, pin and sculpture.

DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System. The DAISY Foundation was formed in January 2000 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at age 33 from complications of an autoimmune disease. His family wanted to say thank you to nurses everywhere by establishing a recognition program – The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses to “honor the super-human work nurses do every day at the bedside.”

The DAISY Award is a merit-based award that honors clinical skill, leadership, strong patient care and compassion.
