2 vacant homes burn in Monday fire
Firefighter OK after getting electric shock while fighting fire
The Fort Dodge Fire Department is working to determine the cause of an early morning fire that burned two vacant houses and gave one firefighter an electric shock.
According to a release from the department, fire crews were dispatched to the area of Third Avenue Northwest and Seventh Street Northwest shortly before 1:30 a.m. on Monday. Two vacant houses, a garage and two trees were on fire. A house at 713 Third Ave. N.W. was engulfed in flames, which then spread to the double garage to the east and the house to the west at 719 Third Ave. N.W.
An “aggressive attack” using four hose lines was made to control the burning structures and keep the fire from spreading to another nearby occupied home and other buildings.
One firefighter came into contact with an overhead power line that had burned and fallen behind 713 Third Ave. N.W., sustaining an electrical shock. The firefighter was evaluated at the scene and remained on duty. No other injuries were reported.
A second alarm was called to bring in additional staff.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The Fire Department was assisted by the Fort Dodge Police Department and MidAmerican Energy Co.
