Once Jordyn Putney pushed her limits in performing, she found her comfort zone.

The St. Edmond Catholic School senior who performs in multiple curricular and extracurricular vocal groups as well as drama and All-State Choir, has found her niche on stage.

“My choir teacher (Ben Wegner) really encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone,” Putney said. “I think from then on out I have found an even bigger passion and love for music.”

One of the most memorable moments for Putney was when she sang the National Anthem for the opening ceremony of the IHSAA state wrestling championship.

“The atmosphere was great and I was so excited to sing,” Putney said. “I don’t think I realized how many people were actually there until they all stood up before I sang.

“It’s definitely nerve-wracking, thinking about how many people are listening to you sing, but once I got through the first couple of notes, it was a huge weight lifted off my shoulders.”

Putney, who has been in over five shows, enjoys her time on the stage.

“The first time you perform it is definitely really nerve wracking,” Putney said. “But now it is so much fun.

“I love being on the stage and sharing something that I love with everyone else.”

The Gael senior recently portrayed Katherine in St. Edmond’s production of “Freaky Friday.”

“I really love all of the friendships that it has given me,” Putney said. “I also love the environment and the emotion that goes into it.”

Through practices and performances, Putney has leaned on her family for support.

“I would say first and foremost my family has been the biggest influence on me,” Putney said. “They are the ones always encouraging me to sing and perform. They sat through hours of me practicing and putting on ‘shows’ for them as a little kid.

“Secondly, I would say my choir teacher. He has encouraged me to do so much and always gives me that extra push to really expand with my talents. He also has made music and performance so much fun for me these last few years of high school.

“Lastly, I would give credit to Mrs. Jenna Hendrix. She really got me into performing arts and helped me develop the funny/sassy character that I am mostly known for.”

Putney’s love for the arts has pushed her into pursuing a career in the fine arts.

“I am attending Arizona State University to get my masters in music education,” Putney said. “I hope to eventually get my doctorate in music and teach at a college.”
