Sheriff’s Office to hire deputy for Otho

The Webster County Sheriff’s Office will soon have more of a presence in the town of Otho.

On Tuesday, the Webster County Board of Supervisors approved an agreement between the county and the city of Otho.

Under the agreement, Otho will pay the WCSO a flat fee of $40,000 annually, and the WCSO will provide an on-duty deputy to respond to calls for service in Otho and assist the city with serving city ordinance violations and service for the annual Fourth of July community events.

Webster County Sheriff Luke Fleener said the agreement and fees paid by Otho will allow him to hire an additional deputy to his staff to fulfill the terms of the agreement.

“This is a win for both the city of Otho and the county,” Fleener said. “This allows us to increase our staffing levels by one to dedicate a deputy to that area, who also will respond to emergency calls around the area.”

Though no hire has yet been made, Fleener did say the first name on the civil service list is Nick Dunbar, who currently serves as the Dayton police chief.

The agreement between the county and Otho goes into effect July 1 and will automatically renew annually on July 1 of each year, unless either party gives written notice of termination of the agreement.
