GOWRIE — Smiles from local ice skaters won’t be the only thing lighting up Brockett Park on Saturday.

The ice rink, located at 1006 Lincoln St., will literally be lit up for a Skating After Dark “On Ice” event. In Your Ear Mobile Sound featuring Dean Vinchattle will provide attendees with a variety of music to hear and multi-colored lights to view. Vinchattle is known across the state for his work as a DJ.

Duane Davis, a member of the Gowrie Area Arts Council, is helping to promote the event. He said Vinchattle plays something for everyone.

“Anywhere from classic rock to country to the latest hits,” Davis said. “The new music the kids enjoy — even ’60s stuff. People just come up and request music. We are very lucky to have him here locally.”

Hot dogs and hot chocolate will also be available for purchase.

The fun will begin at 6 p.m. and end at 9 p.m. All ages are welcome.

The ice rink in Gowrie opened Jan. 22. The effort to provide ice skating was spearheaded by Stephanie Freund and her husband, Alex.

Davis, who advocated for an ice rink in Gowrie 40 years ago, has offered his full support for the project.

“Forty years ago I tried to get this going and people lau ghed at me,” Davis said. “My philosophy was there’s always a lot of baseball and football, but isn’t a lot of winter sports for kids. We could have Olympic champions sitting here in the school, but they don’t have that opportunity.”

The ice rink is a good starting point to expose children to different sporting opportunities. And to build on that, the idea for an event at night was born.

“I used to skate at an Olympic training facility in Siberia,” Davis said. “They had lights and stuff at night. We thought it would be nice to have that sort of thing and draw people out after work.”

Attendees must bring their own skates. Skates are not required to be on the ice.

“Kids can go out there with their snow boots and shoes and slide around,” Davis said.

Cost to attend is free. There is a donation can if attendees feel inclined. The money will go to support improvements to the ice rink for next year.

In the meantime, Davis is just happy to see youngsters enjoying the ice.

“It’s just wonderful to see winter sports in Webster County,” he said. “It’s probably the only ice rink in the county. I think the closest one is in Ames.”

Davis believes the ice rink is long overdue for an area with the climate that Iowa has.

“Here we live in a state that freezes and snows and we need opportunities for kids to participate in those types of events,” he said. “I think that’s important and I think that’s why Stephanie and Alex tried to get it going. They came from ice skating in their youth. I was very happy to see it and just doing what I can to help promote it also. I hope everyone comes out and enjoys it and listens to music and build some excitement for next year.”
