New police contract approved in FD

A new five-year contract with unionized Fort Dodge police officers was approved by the City Council Monday.

The length of the contract is unusual because in recent history, contracts have been for three years.

The agreement with Public Professional and Maintenance Employees Local 2003 goes into effect July 1 and ends June 30, 2027.

It includes 1.5 percent raises to be awarded on July 1; Jan. 1, 2023; July 1, 2023; Jan. 1, 2024; July 1, 2024; and Jan. 1, 2025. Raises for the remainder of the contract period will be negotiated later.

The contract gives officers a $550 uniform allowance. It also gives officers the ability to bid on the shifts they want to work in six-month increments.

The contract covers about 37 officers. The council approved it unanimously with no debate.
