The St. Edmond Chamber Choir students will once again be delivering Singing Valentines this year.

If a group of high schoolers show up at your door on Valentine’s Day, don’t be alarmed, it’s just the St. Edmond Chamber Choir delivering a Singing Valentine.

The choir, made up of auditioned ninth through 12th graders, will once again be singing love songs around town to raise funds for the music boosters. Director of Vocal Music Ben Wegner said money raised will go toward uniform maintenance, bus fees, contest registration fees, the musical, instrument purchase and repair, clinician fees, and many more items that are essential to running the music department.

St. Edmond began the fundraiser at least 20 years ago.“One of my predecessors, Kathleen Schreier, got the idea from a teacher friend at Nevada High School in Nevada, Iowa,” Wegner said. “Students would fundraise by coming into classrooms and into the community dressed in Valentine’s regalia, and Kathleen thought this would fit well within the community of St. Edmond and Fort Dodge.”

Wegner said the students are always excited for the Singing Valentines.

“When I first arrived at St. Edmond in 2017, the Chamber Choir students at the time took me out for lunch to meet me. Even at that first meeting in August, the students talked about February and how much they loved Singing Valentines,” he said. “They really enjoy singing to their friends and family members around the school, giving some joy to people at their homes or places of work, and getting dressed up in festive Valentine regalia. It has really been a tradition at St. Edmond and everyone is very proud to participate in it.”

The cost for a Singing Valentine in town is $25 and includes two songs sung by a small group of high schoolers as well as a long-stemmed red rose. Sending a Valentine to someone in school at St. Edmond is $15. For someone who lives out of town, a virtual Singing Valentine is $10 and includes a video of the choir singing their two songs.
