A long stretch of Third Avenue Northwest in Fort Dodge will be rebuilt this year.

The road will be reconstructed between the Hawkeye Avenue Bridge and Sixth Street Northwest. A curve in the road at the top of the hill by Fifth Street Northwest will be reduced. Water mains and sanitary sewers will be replaced.

On Monday, the City Council hired Castor Construction, of Fort Dodge, to do the work at a cost of $2,644,722.89.

The city has $1.9 million from the state government to help pay for the project. The rest of the money will come from the local option sales tax and water and sewer revenues.

The work is to begin in April and be completed by the end of November.

The street project is one element of the Northwest River District Plan adopted by the City Council in 2015.

Other bidders for the job were Wicks Construction, Decorah, ($2,711,489.18); Rasch Construction, Fort Dodge ($2,725,713.25); and Absolute Concrete Construction, Slater ($3,089,392.70).

The council also awarded a contract for an addition to be built on to the firehouse at 1515 Central Ave. The addition would be to the north side and will provide administrative offices and a meeting room. The overhead doors on the truck garage will also be replaced.

The addition was designed by Allers Associates Architects, of Fort Dodge.

The council hired Kolacia Construction, of Fort Dodge, to build the addition at a cost of $1,374,000.

Other bidders were Jensen Builders Ltd ($1,485,000) and Woodruff Construction ($1,446,067), both of Fort Dodge.
