61 tornadoes

Dec. 15 weather event was historic for Iowa; 8 tornadoes touched Webster County

The devastating wind storm on Dec. 15, 2021 that knocked out power and caused widespread property damage produced the most tornadoes in a single day on record, according to information from the National Weather Service in Des Moines.

The storm already featured the first derecho in December on record anywhere in the U.S. And now the NWS has updated its tornado count from that day. The total number of confirmed tornadoes has increased by 17 after meteorologists finished their analysis on Friday. That brings the unofficial state total to 61.

The previous record for tornadoes in a single day for Iowa was 35 on Aug 31, 2014.

“Dec. 15, 2021 was an unprecedented and historic event for the state of Iowa,” the NWS said in its overview. “Unofficially, it set the new record for most tornadoes in Iowa and the most EF-2/F-2 or stronger tornadoes in a single day in Iowa since 1950. Finally, it will break the all-time December record high temperature for Iowa.”

Twenty-four tornadoes touched down in the greater Fort Dodge region. Eight of those touched down in Webster County. Estimated peak winds for the most powerful EF-2 tornadoes in the county were between 115 and 120 mph.

An EF-2 tornado in Guthrie and Greene counties was on the ground for 21 minutes and traveled 30.1 miles. It had a maximum width of 100 yards with estimated peak winds between 115 and 120 mph. That tornado was among the strongest to tear through the region. It traveled from Springbrook to Bagley, Jefferson and Paton.

According to the NWS, prior to Dec. 15, 2021, a total of five tornadoes had occurred in Iowa in December since 1950. All of those tornadoes were in southeastern Iowa.

“To have over 10 times that many tornadoes in a single day is unprecedented in any month, let alone the month of December,” the NWS said.

Additionally, the all-time December record high temperature for Iowa of 74 degrees was broken with four cities recording 75 degree temperatures. Those cities include: Oskaloosa, Muscatine, Iowa City and Ottumwa. The previous record was held by Thurman on Dec. 6, 1939.

The NWS continues to analyze data from the storm and its information is subject to change.
