Area lawmakers support new districts

Lawmakers serving Webster County supported the new congressional and legislative districts approved Thursday.

State Sen. Jesse Green, R-Harcourt, called the revised districts presented by the Legislative Services Agency as ”just really hard to dispute.”

”These are good districts,” he said.

He voted against the first proposed redistricting plan in early October.

That plan, like the current one, places Green and state Sen. Tim Kraayenbrink, R-Fort Dodge, together in a new Senate District 4.

Still, Green called the new plan ”a great improvement from the first map.”

”They did what we requested of them, which was to make the districts more compact and closer in population deviation,” he said.

Kraayenbrink agreed with that assessment, saying ”Overall, we felt that we addressed our concerns with constituent numbers.”

He said he was ”fully in favor of voting for the maps.”

State Rep. Mike Sexton, R-Rockwell City, voted for the plan. He said he would have voted for the original proposal.

Sexton said if a third set of maps had to be produced, the lawmakers could modify it. That is something he said he did not want to happen.

”I didn’t want to get to map 3,” he said. ”I just didn’t want the Legislature to get involved in it.”

State Rep. Ann Meyer, R-Fort Dodge, was recovering at home from a medical procedure and was not present for Thursday’s special session. She said Thursday evening that she would have voted for the new maps.
