3 seats on FDCSD board up for election

District urges residents to consider running

The Fort Dodge Community School District has three seats on its school board up for election this fall.

The election will be held Nov. 2. School board members are elected to serve four-year terms, with elections taking place in odd-numbered years. Those elected receive no pay.

Nomination papers for FDCSD school board seats are available from the board secretary, Adriana Utley, at the Central Office, 109 N. 25th St.

The office is open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. School board candidates must obtain the signatures of at least 50 qualified electors.

Nominations for open seats can be filed between Aug. 23 and Sept. 16. See all key dates and deadlines at www.ia-sb.org/getonboard.

Current school board members include: Stu Cochrane, board president; Lisa Shimkat, vice president; Bill Kent, Angie Tracy, Dan Hansen, Matt Mortiz and Diane Pratt.

The FDCSD and the Iowa Association of School Boards are urging Iowans who are passionate about education to consider running in the school board election.

“Public schools need strong leadership and governance to ensure a bright future for all children and communities across the state,” the two entities said in a press release.

“Strong leadership is critical to moving education forward in our community and our state. School board members play significant roles in their communities–they must have leadership, vision and dedication. Experienced school board members say the rewards of service lie in meeting the needs of children and communities.”

Matt Moritz, FDCSD board member, said he takes pride in being on the board.

“We have an important role in student learning, determining educational goals, setting policy, and overseeing school finances,” said Moritz. “I take pride in knowing I am helping lead our district in a way that will provide all students with the educational foundation and opportunities they need to be successful in school and in life.”
