Iowa Central to get state aid boost

Nearly $400K set for Fort Dodge school

Iowa Central Community College will receive nearly $400,000 in additional state aid beginning July 1.

It will also be able to tap into an expanded $4.7 million fund to pay for retraining workers of existing Iowa businesses.

Those figures were released Wednesday evening as state lawmakers appeared to be on the verge of finally adjourning the 2021 legislative session.

”We are very pleased with the strong bipartisan support Iowa’s community colleges have had this legislative session,” said Jim Kersten, Iowa Central’s vice president of external affairs and government relations.

He thanked the members of the local legislative delegation for their support. The delegation includes state Sen. Tim Kraayenbrink, R-Fort Dodge, who is chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee. Other lawmakers serving Webster County are state Sen. Jesse Green, R-Harcourt; and state representatives Ann Meyer, R-Fort Dodge; Mike Sexton, R-Rockwell City; and Rob Bacon, R- Slater.

”They understand the value Iowa Central brings to our region,” Kersten said.

”We will continue to partner with our local schools, business and industry, students and families in a cost-effective manner.” he added.

Iowa Central will receive a $383,674 increase in state aid on July 1, according to Kersten.

That will bring total state aid to the school to $12,209,860.

Legislation passed this year will add $1.7 million to the Workforce Retraining program, boosting it to $4.7 million.

Community colleges use money from that program to teach workers at Iowa businesses new skills.

How much Iowa Central will get from that program will depend on how many businesses ask it for retraining help.
