Hurdel trial to move venues

The first-degree murder trial for a Fort Dodge man accused of killing his estranged wife in August 2020 will be moved out of Webster County after a day-long jury selection failed to seat a panel of jurors on Tuesday.

A new trial date and new venue for the trial have yet to be decided.

Justin Christopher Hurdel, 44, was arrested on Aug. 6, 2020, for allegedly shooting and killing his estranged wife, Maggie Flint, the day before. Flint was known as Maggie Hurdel during her marriage to the defendant.

Hurdel led police on a 17-hour manhunt across the city before he was tracked down by a Webster County Sheriff’s Office K-9 at a shed near the junction of U.S. Highway 20 and Webster County Road P59.

Hurdel was taken to UnityPoint Health — Trinity Regional Medical Center for treatment of injuries to his face sustained by a self-inflicted gunshot wound and then later charged with first-degree murder.

Testimony in Hurdel’s trial was originally scheduled to begin today.
